MSM and Taiwan reporting

There's a news post up from my NYTimes feed, and the abstract is as follows:

"China said that its military intercepted a missile in midflight on Monday in a test of new technology that comes amid heightened tensions over Taiwan."

The actual news story (which is scarcely longer than the little RSS abstract) says that the tensions are due to the latest round of weapon sales. It seems rather odd to me to call the latest round of sales "heightened tensions". The Ma regime has done a good job getting tension to the lowest level in a long time. This is a mere hiccup. While the new missile is important for any military calculus in the region, it's not the threatening development the NYT makes it seem.
